No let-up in training
for world champion

NIETES PREPARES HARD
FOR FIRST TITLE DEFENSE

Despite the uncertainty of his first title defense, Negrense world boxing champion Donnie Nietes is training without let-up to ensure that he will step into the ring in the best possible shape.

Nietes, the World Boxing Organization mini flyweight champion, has been penciled to face Colombia’s Daniel Reyes in an April 18 card in Dubai, but organizers of the event have expressed concern that the card, headlined by Filipino world champion Nonito Donaire, will not push through because of budget constraints.

Nietes, of Murcia town and Bacolod City, said he expects to receive word from the organizers on March 31 on whether the card will go on as scheduled.

Sharp bowlfest starts

The first Conference of the Sharp Phils.-sponsored Open Trio Bowling Tournament rolls off at 6 tonight at the New Top’s Millennium Plaza Bowling Alley in Bacolod City.

Organizer Irnie Diaz said the event is a 10-game series tournament where the top eight squads will play in an up-the-ladder system to determine the champion in two divisions to be contested.

Expected to see action are Mulo Car Aircon  Services, Negros Professional Bowlers Club/LJP Trading/MJS, NPBC Tough Trucks Surplus, Active Solid Strikers Fellowship Bowlers Inc., Barangay I ASSFBI, Silverado ASSFBI, Amor Adobo ASSFBI, Triple-C ASSFBI, ESD Silverado/ASSFBI, Knights of Columbus, Alimon Steel, Hurricane/Brgy.I, Panasonic, Sharp, Condura Ladies/ASSFBI,  Lady Dragon, Firefly, Lady Circle ASSFBI, Sharp, ON-BACIBA, NPBC Ladies, Team Justice, among others.

Talisay honors reg’l winners

The Talisay City government honored its secondary baseball and elementary girls’ volleyball team for winning the titles in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet in San Jose, Antique recently.

The baseball team was led by Coach Randy Britania and trainers Leo Oñasa, Jeffrey Jobero, Primo Milavo and Luny Oñasa and team captain Martin Egina.

Coach Corazon Garovillo together with trainer Globert Layan and skipper Marian Mae Apuhin spearheaded the girls’ volleyball team.
