Tuting seeking DOLE opinion
to end Dumaguete port strike
BY RENE GENOVE

Mayor Agustin Perdices yesterday asked for an opinion from the Department of Labor and Employment on whether or not the strike at the Dumaguete port is legal, and if the strikers could block the free flow of cargo.

Perdices said the opinion will serve as guide for the action the city will take on the impasse between the strikers and the Prudential Brokerage and Stevedoring Company.

Ingress and egress to the port is being blocked by the strikers to the detriment of the port users, the mayor said, adding that “The strike is affecting the economic interest of the city because businessmen had to increase their prices due to the added cost for the use of alternate port or wharf.”

The body of a man believed summarily executed, was buried yesterday afternoon when no one claimed it at a funeral parlor in Bacong town, about 15 minutes south of Dumaguete City.

The victim was still unidentified as of press time yesterday, police investigators said.

Bacong police said that the body, already in the state of rigor mortis, was found in a former quarrying site that locals call the “basurahan” or garbage dump, in Barangay Combado of that town, on Monday afternoon.

power outage

The 50-MVA transformer at the Amlan Substation of the National Transmission Corporation was placed on emergency shutdown at 4:01 p.m. Monday, due to an excessive oil leakage at the upper portion of the transformer main tank of TRANSCO.

Department manager Zosimo Briones of TRANSCO said that most areas of Negros Oriental, particularly Dumaguete City, experienced rotating brownout starting 4:01p.m. until 10:20 p.m. Monday, and starting 7:50 a.m. yesterday.

Briones said the affected coverage areas of the Negros Oriental Electric Cooperative II have been temporarily supplied with power through a smaller 30-MVA transformer at the Amlan Substation as an immediate remedial measure.
