Transco explains
power outage
BY RENE GENOVE

The 50-MVA transformer at the Amlan Substation of the National Transmission Corporation was placed on emergency shutdown at 4:01 p.m. Monday, due to an excessive oil leakage at the upper portion of the transformer main tank of TRANSCO.

Department manager Zosimo Briones of TRANSCO said that most areas of Negros Oriental, particularly Dumaguete City, experienced rotating brownout starting 4:01p.m. until 10:20 p.m. Monday, and starting 7:50 a.m. yesterday.

Briones said the affected coverage areas of the Negros Oriental Electric Cooperative II have been temporarily supplied with power through a smaller 30-MVA transformer at the Amlan Substation as an immediate remedial measure.

Seven municipalities and two cities were hit by the 7-hour power outage. These are the towns of Amlan, San Jose, Sibulan, Bacong, Valencia, Dauin, Zamboaguita, Siaton, Sta. Catalina, and the cities of Bayawan and Dumaguete.

Since the smaller capacity of the transformer presently online is not capable of supplying power to all affected areas, NORECO II has resorted rationing its power distribution, TRANSCO said.

As of press time, TRANSCO that if no major damage is found on the 50-MVA transformer, it is expected that power supply in the province will normalize before evening yesterday.

Meanwhile, Dominador Sherwin Tragico Jr. of NORECO 2 Transmission and Distribution Department, said they may implement the power shedding system.

This will shut down NORECO 2 feeder lines at random   in order to prevent the occurrence of low voltage, he said.

Dumaguete, being the center of business and major offices, remains the priority   area  for  power  supply, Tragico said.*RG
