| Military and police personnel remain on alert in Negros while bracing for possible attacks of the New People’s Army, as it marks its 39th founding anniversary on March 29.
Police Supt. William Senoron yesterday said checkpoints were established in key areas of Sagay City, in response to reports about the deployment of NPA assassins in northern Negros.
Police records show that a certain Roland Caro, 20, was intercepted and arrested at a checkpoint in front of the 15th Infantry Battalion headquarters in Brgy. Bato, Sagay City, for having a .45 caliber pistol with a magazine containing ammunition.
Senoron, Sagay police chief, said the 15th IB is conducting a background information check on Caro whose residency in Brgy. Rizal, Sagay City, was confirmed by his parents and barangay officials.
Caro claimed he was keeping the gun for self-protection.
Maj. Nathaniel Villasor, 303rd Infantry Brigade Civil Military Operations chief, yesterday confirmed having received information about the deployment of rebel hitmen in some areas of northern Negros.
Villasor said the NPA usually trains assassins whose ages range from 17 to 22 years old.
Military records also showed that it is already an NPA tradition to stage attacks on government installations during its anniversary.
Suspected NPA rebels burned two transloading stations in Toboso on March 16, two weeks after they also raided a police assistance center and disarmed two militiamen in Sagay City.*GPB
