Bacolod marks girl child week

The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod passed a resolution last week declaring March 23 to 29, 2008 as Girl Child Week in the city, a press release from Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, who proposed it, said.

The resolution encourages barangays to engage in continuing efforts for the protection of children.

The press release also said that Bacolod, through the Bacolod City Gender and Development Council, has marked March as National Women’s Month and has undertaken various programs to address the issues on child abuse, trafficking and child labor in partnership with various agencies and non-government organizations.

It stresses the need to provide every girl who is below 18 years, with equal opportunities and adequate protection to prepare her for her role in community development.

The national theme for this year’s celebration, “Karapatan ng Batang Babae Pahalagahan, Higit sa Panahon ng Disaster,” highlights the special needs of girl-children in situation of emergencies and disasters, the press release said.

Meanwhile, the city council also passed a resolution supporting the call of the youth caravan for peace from Mindanao to Corregidor from March 13 to18, 2008 for the immediate resolution of the Mindanao conflict and implementation of peace agreements.

Copy of the resolution will be given to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Chairman Al Haj Murad Ebrahim of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Peace Panel and the Mindanao People’s Caucus, the press release added.*
