| A meeting on the preparations of the province for the 2nd Philippine Olympic Visayas Qualifying Games slated in July, at various venues in Dumaguete City and Sibulan, Negros Oriental, has been called by Gov. Emilio Macias.
Provincial sports coordinator Buddy Ravello said yesterday that the number of events was increased from l7 to 21, and will include badminton, gymnastics, power lifting, and golf.
The Philippine Olympic Committee had chosen the host for the games, organizers said.
Representatives of different colleges and universities such as NORSU President Dr. Henry Sojor, Aparicio Mequi - Foundation University, and those from Saint Paul University and Silliman University, Department of Education, and private schools in Dumaguete, Mayor Tony Renacia of Sibulan and members of the Sports Facilities Board of Management, attended the meeting.
The gathering aimed to identify the venues for the events, such as aquatics and swimming, arnis, athletics, baseball, basketball, volleyball, football, sepak takraw, archery, judo, softball, and taekwondo, among others.
School administrators assured the provincial government that they will make their facilities available for the weeklong games.
They also adopted the suggestion of Sojor to declare “No Classes” on July 23-28, during the holding of the games.
The municipality of Sibulan has been selected as one of the venues.
Macias wants all the championship games held in provincial government-run sports facilities, so they will be played in the venues around the Capitol Area.
Macias also pledged to extend financial assistance to schools and universities for the preparation of the venues to make them at par with those at international events.*MA
