Cops nab 23 for
illegal cockfighting

BY PATRICK PANGILINAN

Twenty-three persons were arrested by law enforcers at an illegal cockpit in Bacolod City yesterday, the police said.

Six Police Station 2 members nabbed Rodrigo Alcala, Elmer Mariquit, Pablo Villaflor, Danny Javellana, Eric Layson, Hernanie Bacala, Vicente Mapa, Rolando Lobaton, Dandy Deoma, Marlo Superficial, Adolfo Occeda, Wilfredo Gredeso, Ranny Diaz, Mariorito Badi, PO1 Dax Santillan, said.

Also apprehended in the sting at the illegal cockpit at the interior of 18th Street, Brgy. 4, Bacolod, at about 2:30 p.m. yesterday, were Rolly Medes, Oliver Barzabal, Chuck Aborales, Raffy Guarte, Christian Londres, Eddie Abaque, Eric Gellada, Adonis Gelaton, Santillan said.

Police Station 2 commander, Senior Inspector Luisito Acebuche, said they raided the place because its operation is prohibited under Presidential Decree 1602.

Other patrons of the cockpit, which have been operating since Sunday, managed to flee, including its organizers, he said.

The permit for the fiesta at the barangay, Acebuche said, was just for entertainment purposes, which only allows the use of roads for athletic events or benefit dances.

Acebuche said they will file illegal gambling charges against the 23 today.

Meanwhile, Bacolod City Police Office director, Senior Supt. Ronilo Quebrar, said, individuals or groups who want to put up legal cockpits such as the one in Brgy. Tangub, should secure the necessary documents from them and the Games and Amusement Board.*PP
