‘No fly zone’ in
city eyed

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Councilor Tony Remollo proposed yesterday to disallow light aircrafts manned by student pilots to fly the air space over the densely populated area in Dumaguete City, in the wake of past accidents.

He said the “No Fly Zone” must be imposed in the city as the recent crash landings in Cebu on small planes are alarming.

Lawyer-members among the city council have expressed reservations on whether local government units have the authority to regulate air spaces, which is the jurisdiction of the Air Transportation Office and in lieu of the formation of a new regulatory body following the orders of President Gloria Arroyo.

Remollo said he has observed a growing number of student pilots, mostly foreign nationals who are availing of the services from a local flying school.

Councilors Rommel Erames and Franklin Esmena said, on the other hand, that enforcement of Remollo’s proposal could be another problem.*JG
