Water crisis looms
in NegOr: Baldado

BY MARICAR ARANAS & RENE GENOVE

Vice Gov. Jose Baldado yesterday reiterated his warning against a looming water crisis in Negros Oriental, as the remaining forest cover in the province is only 4 percent, a far cry from its 90 percent wooded areas in the 1880’s.

Baldado said the diminishing forest cover has made water a critical resource, as “one of the main sources of water is the forest.”

The lack of trees results to the rainwater flowing directly to the ocean, instead of getting absorbed into the soil, he said.

Buy milk from
local farmers: PVO
BY ROMY AMARADO

Various local government units in Negros Oriental are now responding positively to the “Gatasang Barangay” program that promotes production of fresh milk from domesticated animals, especially cows, carabaos and goats.

Provincial veterinarian Antonio Mutia said yesterday the program is designed to provide livelihood to local farmers, and help address malnutrition of children, through milk feeding.

Bayawan City is buying fresh milk from farmers and supplying it to pre-schoolers of 10 day care centers, he said. Canlaon City has also indicated its interest in adopting the program, Mutia said.
