| The Public Employment Office of the Bacolod City government is accepting applicants for its Special Program for the Employment of Students until tomorrow, Executive Assistant to the Mayor Moises de la Cruz said yesterday.
Dela Cruz said the city can accommodate up to 130 scholars. Applicants are required to submit a certificate from the school where they are enrolled, a certificate from the barangay captain that he or she is a resident of a barangay in Bacolod City, and their family income should not exceed P30,000 a year, he said.
The applicant should be 15 to 25 years old and have no failing grade, he added.
Dela Cruz said the summer jobbers will conduct surveys in the barangays to help the city in the “skills map” that it is preparing and also will help distribute bills of the Land Tax Division to help Bacolod in its tax collection efforts.
Meanwhile, the PESO has deployed 1,016 Overseas Filipino Workers abroad from January to February this year, Dela Cruz said. Last year, they have deployed a total of 1,771 workers.
“With the rate we are going, I believe we can triple the deployment of workers this year because of the desire of the mayor to increase employment opportunities,” he added.
De la Cruz said they will start providing skills training program such as pipe fitting and welding next month. They have also made arrangement with the VMA Global College for the training of service crew, he said.
One company in the United Arab Emirates alone is in need of 1,000 service workers and the demand is expected to increase to 6,000 in 2010, Dela Cruz said. There is a great demand for service workers abroad, he said.
Next week, the city together with the Department of Labor and Employment, will conduct career orientation seminars for high school students, Dela Cruz said. The orientation will focus on technical or blue collar jobs which is needed in other countries, he said.*CGS
