Sibulan police chief
eyes vendors-free park
BY MARICAR ARANAS

The new chief of police in Sibulan has instituted reforms and a strategy to encourage Sibulanons to love their place and invite tourists and investors.

He has convinced the mayor and the Sangguniang Bayan to clear the municipal park of vendors, and for the establishment of the so-called “police at the park,” Senior Inspector Errol Garchitorena said yesterday.

The Sibulan police station is now situated at the municipal plaza for visibility and a semblance of order, but the detention center will remain at the old site.

FARM STRIKE LIKELY, PARC MEMBER SAYS
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The agrarian reform program is not killing the country’s agricultural sector, refuted a member of the Presidential Agrarian Reform Council headed by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, on accusations that the CARP does not improve the farmers’ lot.

PARC member Jimmy Tadeo made the statement as agrarian reform beneficiaries from three regions signed a manifesto for the extension of CARP to another 10 years, during a public hearing in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, recently.

Tadeo said the real reason for the perceived failure of the CARP is the lack of support services from the government such as irrigation, farm-to-market roads, and corruption in government.
