‘It was gastroenteritis’
BY NIDA BUENAFE

The 23 persons from Mighty Corp. who were confined at the  Pablo O. Torre Memorial Hospital Sunday night suffered from acute gastroenteritis, Bacolod City Health Officer Salome Biñas said yesterday.

She said all patients  have been  released from the hospital.

The patients ruled out spoiled food as the cause of their diarrhea and vomiting since there was nothing wrong with the taste of the food they were served during their activity, Biñas said.

Most of them told her they could have been dehydrated after spending the day under the sun during their sportsfest.

However, as a medical practitioner, Biñas said dehydration due to long outdoor exposure cannot be directly linked to acute gastroenteritis.

Results of the laboratory tests from the samples taken from the patients had not been released by the hospital yet, she said.

Biñas said 79 persons sought treatment due to abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomiting. Fifty-six went home after seeing a physician and  23 were hospitalized for observation, she said.

The CHO also ruled out contaminated water as the cause of the patients’ diarrhea since they were served bottled water by their caterers.

There is no cause for alarm of possible food poisoning in Bacolod  since what happened to the employees of Mighty Corp. was an isolated case that was immediately addressed, Biñas said.*NAB
