| The League of Vice Governors of the Philippines yesterday passed a resolution declaring its unwavering support for President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Bohol Vice Governor Julius Caesar Herrera, LVGP president, said.
We will not support any extra-constitutional effort to unseat Arroyo, the unprecedented economic growth under her administration should be sustained, the LVGP resolution said.
Forty-seven vice governors passed the resolution at their LVGP 35th National Assembly at L’Fisher Hotel in Bacolod City hosted by Negros Occidental.
Herrera said the vice governors are also seeking the truth on allegations of corruption but due process provided under the law must be followed to ensure continued economic growth and to avoid chaos.
The LVGP resolution said Arroyo has contributed much to the improvement of the Philippine economy resulting in an unparalleled GNP growth rate of 7.3 percent in 2007.
It also pointed out that the external debt when she took over as president in 2001 was 68.3 percent of the GNP compared to 36 percent of the GNP today, and the foreign debt service was 14.9 percent of export, tourism receipts and OFW remittances compared to 9.47 percent in 2007, the LVGP added.
The LVGP also noted, in its resolution, that the appreciation of the peso against the US dollar and other currencies is also indicative of a resurging economy.
Unprecedented infrastructure projects and national government support services were also extended to the provinces alleviating the poverty situation in the country, the LVGP said.
Protest actions will only distract and stifle the effort for economic growth and the momentum that should be the more important goal while letting the courts resolve and ferret out the truth, the LVGP added.
Accusations against the president have been all talk, no evidence has been provided, Herrera said.
Meanwhile, we have no assurance that the person who will replace the president should she be removed from office now will make our lives better, we should instead just respect the Constitution and wait for the 2010 elections, he said.
Herrera also charged that Senate witness Rodolfo Lozada’s attacks on the administration are politically-motivated. There are people behind Lozada, he said, but did not give names.
He also questioned Lozada’s motive for speaking at major provinces around the country.
Lozada is set to speak in Bacolod City next week.*CPG
