KJ-CSB, Baciwa cagers
clinch last semis berths

BY CEDELF TUPAS

KJ-Fairmart City Savings Bank and Baciwa took contrasting routes to the class B semifinals of the 8th Tan Kek Pin Cup Memorial Basketball Tournament Thursday night at the Po Hang Gym.

Baciwa bundled out Gentech Atlantic, 93-88, while KJ cruised past Foodman, 113-79, to join Head and Shoulders and Davies Luis Paint in the last four.

KJ and Baciwa meet today at the beginning of the single-round semis. Head and Shoulders clashes with Davies prior to the KJ-Baciwa match.

On Sunday, it will be Davies against Baciwa at 3 p.m., before Head and Shoulders battles KJ-CSB.

Sugar Ray Lopez starred for Baciwa in the final period, where he scored 14 of his 24 markers, while Ryan Agena and Melvir Dioteles added 14 and 9, respectively.

Baciwa hung on to a 41-40 lead at halftime, before Agena and Kevin Molina gave them enough edge to fend off Gentech heading into the final quarter.

Gentech was led anew by Yen Dolar, who turned in a game-high 29 points. Dolar, however, was shackled in the final quarter, where he struggled with only 5 points. Tata Cango chipped in 18 for Gentech, which drew 10 from Arnold Betita and 8 from Johnnyson Yu.

Sherman Gonzales had 20 points for KJ, whose firepower proved too much for Foodman.

The KJ attack was so well-distributed that five players came up with double-digit numbers, including Gonzales.

Gherard Abrot and JR Fernandez registered 17 apiece, Te Espejo scored 13 and Rhett Demonteverde picked up 12. RJ Penas and Abe Longa also got into the scoring fray with 9 each.

Foodman was led by Bobby Yap 18 and Santiago Rapiz  with 11. Christopher Tan finished with 10, while Kieron Tan picked up 9 points.*CPT
