Silliman joins 2008 National Women’s Month

The Center for Gender Studies and Development of Silliman University in Dumaguete City celebrated the 2008 National Women’s Month on Thursday.

The theme for this year, “CEDAW ng Bayan: Yaman ng Kababihab.” focuses on the need to generate resources to finance initiatives on gender equality and the empowerment of women.

The Silliman community gave meaning to the life and significant work of a champion in promoting women empowerment, Norma Catacutan Ybañez.

Ybanez, a former coordinator of the CGSD and co-chairperson of the Negros Oriental Provincial Commission on Women, was recognized for her pioneering work in behalf of women in pursuit of equality, peace, and development that her successor generation seeks to uphold into this 21st century, Phoebe Tan of SU said.

The Philippines last year was cited by the United Nations for its unwavering efforts in promoting the rights of women, resulting in a dramatic decrease in discrimination against women in the country.*RG
