Exploration
permit set to expire
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Militant organizations and environmentalists from Cebu and Negros are closely watching the oil exploration in the Tañon Strait, as the 41-day extension period will expire this weekend.

In an interview with the DAILY STAR, Trelly Marigza of women’s group Gabriela lamented the “playing safe” position of some local officials regarding the concern for environment, especially when it comes to government-initiated projects like the Tañon Strait oil exploration.

In spite of this, Marigza said they are continuing with their campaign for Sangguniang Bayan resolutions to oppose the project.

She said Sibulan and Bais City already did that, while other LGUs, like Dauin, have also signified their intention.

Marigza was scheduled to have an audience with the Mayor’s League of the Philippines Negros Oriental chapter seek its members’ support.

House Bill 212 calls for an inquiry into the Tañon Strait oil exploration with the three representatives in the province.

However, Marigza admitted, they cannot expect so much because the two important committees in Congress are chaired by the Arroyos.

The committee on environment is chaired by Rep. Ignacio Arroyo (Neg.Occ., 5th district) and the committee on energy is chaired by Rep. Mikey Arroyo (Pampanga).*JG
