Learn from past mistakes,
Boracay stakeholders told

BORACAY ISLAND, AKLAN – Tourism Secretary Joseph “Ace” Durano yesterday called on Boracay residents, resort owners and other stakeholders to learn from past mistakes in managing the island-resort in order to effectively resolve the pressing problems faced by the island.

“If everybody can comply with (rules and guidelines), there is no need for government to come here,” said Durano in a speech during the day-long workshop on the Boracay Island Comprehensive Land Use Plan.

Durano said addressing Boracay's long-running problems require unity among the stakeholders and a commitment to preserve the environment and resources.

FTA, CBCP push for suspension
of RP-China land use agreement

The Fair Trade Alliance and the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines are pushing for the permanent suspension of an agreement, which allows China to utilize 1.2 million hectares of idle and under-utilized land in the Philippines.

Dr. Rene Ofreneo of the Free Trade Alliance, a multi-sectoral group pushing for fair trade policy, said that while the government has suspended the RP-China deal, there is still an ongoing consolidation of the data needed by government agencies involved in the agreement.

In January last year, Ofreneo said the government has committed 1.2 million hectares to China, which set into motion the process of identifying lands covered by the deal.
