3 Negrense make
grade in elite camp
BY CEDELF TUPAS

After showing their immense potential during a two-day tryouts in Bacolod City recently, three young players from Negros Occidental were selected to the six-day Nike Elite Basketball Camp set March 14-19 at Brent International School in Mamplasan, Laguna.

They are Rafael Melocoton, a former University of St. La Salle-Integrated School, who is now seeing action for Iloilo Central Commercial High School; Rowel Minerales, who studies at St. Joseph School-Iloilo, after spending his elementary years at USLS-IS, and Escalante-born John Mark Prieto of ICCHS.

Also making it to the camp was Orly Pelopero of ICCHS.

Only the top 80 players from the try-outs conducted nationwide made the grade for the Laguna camp, Elite Camp directors Alex Compton and Eric Altamirano said.

The Nike Elite Camp, they said, is a recognized program of the BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, which hopes to identify, develop and prepare the outstanding players for the national youth squads that will compete in FIBA-sanctioned tournaments.*CPT
