Gentech, Baciwa cagers stay alive
BY CEDELF TUPAS

Gentech Atlantic and Baciwa moved closer to the Class B semifinals of the 8th Tan Kek Pin Cup Memorial Basketball Tournament after overwhelming different rivals Sunday at the Po Hang Gym.

Yen Dolar exploded for 32 points to help Gentech beat Air Power Services, 89-79, while Baciwa hacked out a come-from-behind 83-79 victory over Amspec.

Baciwa and Gentech Atlantic were to play in a knockout match last night, before KJ Fairmart battles Foodman. The winners will join Davies Davies-Luis Paint  and Head and Shoulders in the semis.

Gentech seized command in the first quarter and never looked back with Dolar, Omar Galunan and Arnold Betita joining hands to keep APS at bay.

Stephen Barnesa and Henry Agbas tried in vain to put APS back in the game in the second period but Galunan and Dolar took charge anew and gave Gentech a comfortable 63-44 lead heading into the final period.

Gentech was under threat again in the fourth quarter as John Montemayor hit six triples, before Dolar and Tata Cango stymied the rally.

Cango added 16 points, including 8 in the fourth quarter, while Galunan finished with 10. Betita and Tubby Villanueva finished with 8 apiece.

Montemayor finished with 28 while Barneso and Agbas contributed 19 and 13, respectively.

Trailing 53-65, Baciwa stifled Amspec with a full-court press in the final period, before Sugar Ray Lopez nailed four free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

Rainier Chico, who finished with 13 points, hastened the Amspec loss when he flubbed a pass with 2.6 seconds left.

Melvir Dioteles paced Baciwa with 18 points, while Lopez and Ronald Padios added 14 apiece. JP Yulo posted 12 and Ryan Agena added 9.

Gerton Dandoy, whose jumper with 20.6 remaining cut the lead, 80-79, finished with 14 points. Rine Miag-ao came up with 15.*CPT
