Probac and Bapro geared up for its respective quarterfinal showdowns by downing the Province of Negros Occidental and BBC, respectively, Saturday night in the class A division of the 8th Tan Kek Pin Cup Memorial Basketball Tournament.
Tommy Andren waxed hot with eight triples en route to a game-high 28 points that carried Bapro past BBC, 106-91, and clinch the fifth spot in division, before Probac hammered out a 90-81 triumph over Province.
Bapro was to play Province late yesterday, before Probac and BBC clash. The winners will join Talisay and World of Fun in the semifinals.
Andren nailed three triples in the fourth period and got help from GE Quizan and Matt Deles in finally putting away the game for Bapro, which scored its first win in the tournament.
Bapro led 44-42 at halftime, thanks to Badong Eufre and Sammy Belangel who combined for 18 points in the half, before Andren caught fire in the second half.
BBC was led by Joebert Pastias with 18 and Joemarie Bayhon 16. Lawrence Cornelio, Edward Quizan ,Ryan Jangayo and Jeff Maningos added 11 apiece.
Probac leaned on a balanced offensive with Mark Sabusap and Ariston Sillana leading the way with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Ryan Concha, Peewee Demonteverde and Andy Angudong joined forces for 28 points.
In class B action, Amspec ended Sam’s Gym run with a 75-74 win Friday night. Sam’s Gym actually got going early, taking a 45-36 lead at halftime as Marco Avecilla and Brad Hojilla bearing the brunt on offense.
But Rainier Chico and Ismael Rondez scored decisive baskets at crunchtime to complete the come-from-behind win. It was Rine Miag-ao who sealed the win with two free throws with 11 seconds left that made it 75-71.
David Lacson converted a buzzer-beating triple to peg the final count.
Rainier Chico finished with 16, 5 in the fourth period, while Rondez added 11. Jose Vivero and Ryan Dondoyano contributed 10 and 9, respectively.
Panasonic defeated Breizh, 80-70, in the other game.*CPT
