| Regional Palaro-bound athletes Rolando Uberas, Ana Marie Jagocoy, and Mary Joy Caporas came through with multiple golden finishes to power the high school team of Bacolod City to the title in the NOTAFA Age-Group Athletic Competition Saturday at the University of St. La Salle oval in Bacolod City Saturday.
Sharing the spotlight with the Bacolod athletes were the Kabankalan standouts, who topped the elementary division with 19 top finishes.
Uberas, and Jagocoy finished the tournament with five gold medals, the same output of Kevin Liboon. Caporas won four gold medals for Bacolod City, which collected 27 golds.
Uberas, from Bacolod City National High School, lived up to expectations by finishing first in the 100m (11.63 seconds), 200m (24.20) and 400m (54.36) races.
Teaming up with Liboon, Niel Raymond Gicana and Junel Dumaguit, Uberas won the 4x100m and 4x400m, raising hopes for Negros Occidental to do well in the regional palaro games in Antique.
Liboon on the other hand, secured the first place honors for Bacolod City in 800 (2 minutes, 11.29 seconds), 1,500 and 5,000 long distance run.
Matching the sterling performance of their male teammates, Jagocoy, also a senior at BCNHS, made her mark in girls’ 100m, 200m and 400m was part of the relay team that topped the 4x100m and 4x400m, while Caporas, a Palarong Pambansa gold medalist, ruled the 800m, 1,500m, and 3,000m races.
Bacolod City’s other victories came from Alfie Dela Cruz in boys’ long and triple jump, Alfredo David in discus throw and Zeigfred Piansay in shot put; girls’ long jump courtesy of Ruffa Madayag, triple jump by Precious Anne Palacios, and Myka De Oro’s golden finishes in discus throw and shot put.
In the elementary department, Kabankalan City swept all elementary events with Carl Anthony Sabbun leading the way.
Sabbun ruled the boys’ 100m and 400m and, with Rey Rosme, Ritchie Joy Cabanyog, and Rholince Gedalanga, topped the 4x100m.
Jason De los Santos added to the haul of Kabankalan by ruling the 800m and 1,500m races and with Rosme, Cabanyog and Sabbun dominated the 4x400m.
Rosme also took the gold in elementary boys’ long and triple jump while Cabanyog topped the discus throw and shot put.
In the girls’ division, Regien Sequiza and Estela Alvarez led the medal harvest for Kabankalan.
Sequiza reigned in 200m and 400m while Alvarez grabbed the gold in 800m and 1,500m. With Grace Shiela Mendez and Fea Gellecanao, Sequiza and Alvarez got another gold in 4x400m.
Kabankalan’s other victories came from Erma Rose Gamao in 100m who was also part of quartet who bagged the gold in 4x100m, Fritzie Alesna in long jump; Aubrey Ann Edang, triple jump and Elisha Mae Cabugwason in discus throw and shot put.*
