Boyet steers Sta. Lucia
to first All-Filipino title

BY CEDELF TUPAS

What he did not capture as a PBA player for 12 years, he snared in only his second conference as a coach.

Thrice denied in the finals as a player, coach Boyet Fernandez achieved a personal milestone last night when he bagged his first PBA crown and guided Sta. Lucia to a maiden All-Filipino title before a huge crowd inside the Araneta Coliseum.

In a PBA finals that pitted marquee names in Negros basketball, Fernandez of Valladolid town stood out, his tactics working effectively to foil Escalante's James Yap and the rest of the Purefoods Giants, 100-88, in the winner-take-all game 7.

61ST PAL INTERCLUB
NOGCC triumphs
BY CEDELF TUPAS

There was no final-day drama as Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club, playing steady when it mattered, picked up the founders’ division crown of the 61st Philippine Airlines Interclub in convincing fashion Saturday.

The NOGCC standouts, skippered by Kokoy Locsin, left their rivals groaning under the weight of their blistering performance at the Bacolod Golf and Country Club, where Francis Gaston and Chris Infante spearheaded the relentless charge on the last day of the competition.

With defending champion Cebu Country Club breathing down their necks heading into the final round, Chris Infante atoned for his 27 points on day 2 by topscoring with 34 points, which is equivalent to a 2-over par 72 in medal play.

Pagunsan top
seed in golfest

Negrense Juvic Pagunsan leads the top 30 players seeded in the Konica Minolta National Pro-Am Golf Championship set March 4-8 at The Riviera’s Langer in Silang, Cavite.

The list was released recently by the Professional Golfers Association of the Philippines headed by Jun Bustamante for the guidance of the tournament sponsored by U-Bix through its chairman and president, Edilberto Bravo.

Pagunsan will join the P3-million event if his schedule in the Asian Tour allows.
