200 mayors to attend
sanitation summit ’08

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

About  200  local  chief  executives  from the Visayas  and  Mindanao  will attend the Water and  Sanitation 2008  Summit   at  Bethel  Guesthouse in  Dumaguete  City, April 2 to 3.

Project evaluation  officer Judith Alpuerto of  the  Provincial  Planning  and  Development  Office of Negros Oriental said   the  summit  is in line  with  the International  Year  of  Sanitation celebration.

It is in cooperation with  the  German  Agency for International Cooperation and  the  Department  of  Interior  and  Local  Government  in Negros Oriental.

The  event also aims  to stir the interest  of  the  participants to  come  up  with  a  project  plan  or  program,  that  will address  concerns on water and  sanitation, Alpuerto  said.

At present, only three cities in the province have waste water  treatment facilities.

These are Dumaguete  under  the technical assistance of  the United States Agency for International Development; the Artificial  Wetland Wastewater  Facility  in  Bayawan  City;  and  the recently  completed   Wastewater  Treatment  Facility in  Manjuyod  under  the USAID program.*JG
