| Twenty-five houses were destroyed in a five-hour blaze that hit the Cordova area in Brgy. 18 Bacolod City, shortly before midnight Friday, the fire bureau said yesterday.
The flames, which, started from the house of Nena Tupas, were finally put out past 5 a.m. Saturday after six groups of firefighters responded, FO3 Jerry Resuma of the Bacolod Bureau of Fire Protection, said.
Case investigator FO1 Prinie Melgar is still investigating what actually caused the fire that left about P2 million in properties destroyed, Resuma said.
Most of those who lost their houses to the blaze were not able to secure their belongings because the fire spread fast, Brgy. 18 Captain Madelyn Diaz said.
As the fire was raging Friday, firefighters said that they were closely shielding the Planters’ Trading and Agro Services along Lacson Street from the flames because it contained chemicals that if ignited could have worsened the situation.
Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday said he was immediately briefed by Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson and by the BFP of the incident and he had given instructions for the distribution of food, for medical assistance to be given, and for the relocation of those affected.
The office of Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella also distributed rice to the affected residents, Diaz said.
An official from the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital had said that they treated people with minor injuries at the fire scene Friday.
Emergency personnel from the Amity and Chamber volunteer were also deployed in the area, Resuma of the BFP said.
Aside from the five fire teams from the Bacolod BFP, firefighters from Amity, Chamber, the Tanduay company, and the Silay and Talisay cities, also responded to the call for help, Resuma said.*PP
