Himamaylan
runners top marathon

BY NIDA BUENAFE

Eric Panique of Himamaylan City reported a minute ahead of his fellow Himamaylanon Rowell Hulleza to the finish line to top the men’s 21K event of the 32nd Milo Marathon Bacolod City leg yesterday while Meriam Miranda outran another Himamaylan runner, Allyn Grace Salas, to take the title in the women’s side.

Panique, 25, said the daily training with his fellow runners from Himamaylan under the supervision of former marathon champion Rodolfo Rizalde paid off as they were able to clinch the 1-2 spot in the men’s 21K event. He clocked 1.13:05 to win the event while Hulleza settled for second with 1.14:29 time.

St. Jo NEMA wins bowlfest

St. Joseph NEMA displayed nerves of steel to escape with a 519-517 thriller over UP-Visayas/Colegio de San Agustin-Bacolod Combined to bag the crown in the premiere Class A division of the 1st Sharp and Panasonic-organized Inter-School Alumni Bowling Tournament.

The games, held at the New Top’s Millennium Plaza Bowling Alley at the Capitol Shopping Center in Bacolod City, saw Bacolod City National High School/VSHS taking the title in the Class B category after ripping Negros Occidental High School IsMerc in the finals, 527-512.

Eric Buyco led the assault for St. Joseph with an explosive 131 pinfalls, while Edgar Allan Del Rosario topscored for the losing cause of UP-Visayas with 112.

Magnolia beats Alaska

Splitting his pressure-laden free throw shots with barely a second remaining in the game clock, Mike Cortez gave Magnolia Beverage a one-point victory against former team and defending champion Alaska, 80-79, in the season-ending Smart-PBA Fiesta Conference last night at the Araneta Coliseum.

Receiving the ball from import Amal McCaskill, with the score tied at 79-all, Cortez went for a lay-up but got fouled by Aces import Randy Holcomb. While the import hobbled towards the bench as he absorbed his sixth and final foul for the night, Cortez reported to the free throw line. Though his first attempt failed to go in, he calmly sank the second for the marginal basket.
