IN ANTIQUE
Hinterland residents ordered
to vacate to avoid landslide

ILOILO CITY – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Western Visayas has directed residents of a hinterland village in Antique to evacuate their homes to avoid the risk of a massive landslide, after a three-kilometer crack was discovered along the Panay mountain ranges.

Undersecretary for Line Bureaus Manuel Gerochi of the DENR said the 30-foot deep crack in Barangay Cabladan in Sibalom town could give way, if there is further soil or rock movement caused by  rains or a tremor.

The village is a three-hour walk from Sibalom proper, which is eight kilometers north of the capital town of San Jose.

DENR Regional Executive Director Lormelyn Claudio said the residents have started evacuating Friday.  The village has around 2,000 residents with 200 living in the risk area.

Leo Juguan, Mines and Geosciences Bureau regional chief, said the heavy rains brought by typhoon “Frank” could have caused the crack and because the rock formations in the area are unstable.

Antique provincial environment officer Jesse Vego said the residents have transferred in their belongings in nearby houses and have been cautioned to be on alert during rainy weather.

At least 342 persons died in Western Visayas due to flooding and landslides caused by Frank, according to a report of the Office of Civil Defense. Twenty-seven of the fatalities were from Antique.

Sibalom and San Remigio towns were the hardest hit in the province.*NPB
