Karapatan-Negros leaders
declared ‘persona non grata’

BRGY. LINANTUYAN, Guihulngan City – Residents and local officials of this Negros Oriental remote barangay have not only banned human rights group Karapatan and its allied militant organizations from entering their place, they have also declared their leaders  “persona non grata”.

The declaration of Karapatan-Negros secretary-general Fred Caña, Bayan-Negros secretary-general Felipe Gelle, and local Anakpawis partylist secretary-general Sarah Alvarez as “persona non grata” for allegedly fabricating lies and spreading black propaganda, as well as sowing intrigues against them and the  military assigned in the barangay, was contained in a resolution, which was unanimously approved by the Linantuyan barangay council, its presiding officer Elpedio Villar said.

Valencia to hike electric subsidy

The local government of Valencia, Negros Oriental, is planning to increase the electric subsidy for its residents to P800 starting tomorrow.

This came after the Negros Oriental 2 Electric Cooperative has hinted that it may raise its electric rates by year 2010.

NORECO 2 had signed a contract to buy additional power from two independent power producers. The planned rates increase is in preparation for the expected rise in the demand for electricity, the management said.

Pamplona hosts security confab

Mayor Apolinario Arnaiz Jr. of Pamplona, Negros Oriental, said he is supporting the government’s effort to address the insurgency menace in the country that has lasted for four decades now.

He assured rebels who return to the folds of the law of assistance such as livestock, rice and grocery items, as counterpart of the local government units.

Arnaiz said he recently participated in the joint LGU-AFP-PNP Security Awareness Symposium held in Pamplona, along with other elected officials, army, employees, barangay representatives, teachers and students, among others.
