2008 PHIL. AMATEUR OPEN
Aunzo rules; Anya claims
back-to-back ladies’ crown

Ferdie Aunzo staked his claim as the country’s top amateur golfer while Bacoleña Anya Tanpinco made it back-to-back as the ladies’ champion as competition in the 2008 Philippine Amateur Golf Championship ended yesterday at the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club in Bacolod City.

Aunzo captured the title in the men’s division by overwhelming JR Tanpinco in their marathon 36-hole duel and cruising to a 5&4 win at the course designed by the late Luis “Golem” Silverio.

Aunzo shook off Tanpinco’s early challenge by taking three of the last five holes at the back to go 4-up in their morning clash, endured the 30-minute weather delay shortly after the resumption of play before coasting to the victory, capping a great four week of competitive golf that earned him two victories abroad.

JSY Transport wins
Fil-Sino cagefest title

JSY Transport capped its outstanding performance in the previous games games by beating Sweet Crystal Sugar, 119-101, Friday night to capture the title in the Fil-Sino All Asian Countertrade Inc. Inter-Color Basketball Tournament at the Tay Tung Gym.

It was an uphill climb toward the final round for No. 5 JSY, winning over No. 4 Basecom in the quarterfinals and pulling upset against No. 1 AACI Transport despite the latter’s twice-to-beat edge in the semifinals.
