exceeds tax collection
BY MARICAR ARANAS

The Bureau of Customs in Dumaguete City has exceeded its quota collection for the year, chief customs collector Medolita Cabanag disclosed yesterday.

She said they now have a total tax collection of P18.5 million from the first and second quarters, including the month of July this year.

Although the tax collection in these quarters were affected by the labor dispute at the port area, revenue collection for July helped them reached their target, she added.

Province can't attain
self-sufficiency in rice
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Negros Oriental still cannot attain self-sufficiency in the production of rice despite the upcoming harvest season, provincial agriculturist Greg Paltinca said yesterday.

He said this is because the expected output of rice in the province is not enough to meet the local requirement. Of the total population of more than one million of the province, 60 percent are rice-eating while only 40 percent are corn-eating, he added.

There are now an estimated 6,000 hectares of land planted to rice while cornlands are about 50,000 hectares, Paltinca said

Safety of athletes stressed

Contingents to the Philippine Olympics all-Visayas qualifying games that will kick off tomorrow afternoon in Dumaguete are reminded that they are not in the city for pleasure, or for the night life.

This was stressed by the organizers yesterday at the Lamberto Macias Sports Complex, because of apprehensions about the safety of the athletes when they go out at night.

Vice chairperson Glynda Descuatan of the Negros Oriental Sports and Cultural Facilities Board of Management said, the athletes are supposed to be competing in a serious business.
