In his bid to minimize the consumption of fuel resources as a result of sky-rocketing prices of petroleum and lubricants, Army chief Lt. Gen. Victor Ibrado has ordered the implementation of car-less days in major military camps.
Ibrado said the implementation of car-less days every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, which took effect July 8, will help promote a healthy lifestyle check that can be achieved through walking or biking as an alternative mode of movement inside military camps, aside from cost-cutting measures.
Army personnel are not allowed to use military vehicles inside the camp on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday on each week. However, the use of vehicles during car-less days will only be allowed in cases of emergency, the memorandum of Ibrado said.
Lt. Col. David Tan, 3rd Infantry Division Public Information Officer, said the memorandum will only cover those performing administrative functions inside major military camps.
Tan said personnel involved in military operations are exempted in the memorandum.
Ibrado issued a warning that Army personnel who may found violating the memorandum shall be dealt with accordingly.
On the other hand, the police is bracing a surge in crime, specifically robbery and theft, amid the continuing increase in the prices of basic commodities.
PNP chief Avelino Razon Jr. said he noted that there has been a rise in crimes against property and persons.
“In anticipation we have added more police visibility [and] more patrolling assets as deterrent to crimes," Razon said.
He added they are also beefing up security in public transport facilities as the number of commuters increases, a situation pickpockets might take advantage of.*GPB
