Murcia dumpsite closed

Environment and Natural Resources Region 6 Director Bienvenido Lipayon said the permanent closure of the Murcia Garbage Dumpsite in Barangay Iglau-an, is in compliance to Republic Act 9003, a Murcia press release said.

After months of information and education campaign on R.A. 9003 among barangay residents, the permanent closure of Murcia dumpsite was done with Ma. Aleta Nuñez as guest speaker.

Mayor Esteban Coscolluela formed a speakers bureau to hold discussions on the law, the press release said.

Municipal Ordinance 344, series of 2005 created the Murcia ESWM. The press release emphasized that residents should segregate solid waste at source, and to reduce, re-use, and recycle, it added.*

‘Milk prevents diseases’

Milk is an excellent source of vitamins and nutrients for both adults and children, and its regular intake will prevent diseases, a press release from Bearbrand said.

Most people no longer drink milk as they age, a national nutrition survey conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute showed.

Unknown to them, milk intake provides the body with essential antioxidants such as Zinc, Iron, and Vitamin C that inhibit oxidation and prevent cell damage, and prevent illnesses and diseases, the press release said.

Milk is also rich in calcium, which helps improve bone health. Kids need calcium to develop strong and healthy bones, while adults, especially women, need milk and other dairy products to help prevent osteoporosis.

Vitamin A and protein are also present in milk. Vitamin A is good for the eyesight and protein is necessary for growth and building and maintaining tissues, the press release said.

Zinc helps in faster wound healing and supports a healthy immune system. It is an essential mineral that also aids vision and normal growth and development.

Milk also contains Iron that transports oxygen in the blood to different parts of the body. Iron helps in immune function, energy metabolism, and cognitive development. Vitamin C, meanwhile, aids in forming collagen - a protein in the skin that gives its strength and resilience, the press release added.*

GSP sets orientation

Sixty senior girl scouts from secondary schools in Negros Occidental will attend an orientation on the Chief Girl Scout Medal Scheme, 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the Negros Occidental Girl Scout Council headquarters, in Bacolod City, a GSP press release said.

Medal applicants and their troop leaders will be oriented on the proper procedures and implementation of the program, which is open to currently registered senior girl scouts who are at least on their second year, and must have at least three years scouting experience either as Twinkler, Star, Junior or Senior girl scouts.

They must have earned at least one badge each on the 8-point challenge senior program, the press release said.

Chief trainer for the orientation will be Feliciana Claridad, council commissioner on the program, assisted by Council executive director Carmencita Roble, technical assistant Rosario Canindo, training committee vice chairperson Lina Perez, Diplomae’d trainer Alice Canieso and training committee chair Lavender Hipolito, the press release added.*
