IN FISTS OF FIRE
Melligen vows knock down

BY GUILLERMO TEJIDA III

Defending Philippine Super Lightweight champion Mark Jason Melligen of Bacolod City yesterday said he has a single task  – to knock down contender Cris Alag of Cagayan de Oro City in the sixth or seventh round in their 12-round duel dubbed “Fists on Fire,”  at the West Negros University Gym at 6 p.m. today.

Alag, though, took the challenge and said he will prove his mettle as Philippine Boxing Federation king when he takes the canvas against the southpaw Melligen, the country’s top Junior Welterweight pugilist in the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation, World Boxing Organization and World Boxing Federation, in the 140-lb category.

GUANGZHOU, China – The Domingo Lacson National High School 14-16 senior team prevailed yesterday over host China,2-1, in a preview of their championship showdown in the 2008 Little League Girls Softball Asia Pacific Tournament at the Huangcun Sports Training Base here.

After a scoreless first inning, Julie Marie Muyco of DLNHS drove the ball midfield and managed to get into the first base for the first run of the Philippine team in the second inning.

Muyco, a senior, who is suffering from a foot injury, however, had to be replaced by Jusel Marie Talaban on the first base for the eventual run.

2 Bacolod darters
win June tourney

Rising from the losers bracket, Bacolod veteran darters Rommel Bagotayao and Richmond Ganon posted a come-from-behind win to top the June edition of the monthly Darts Tournament at the New Tops Millennium Plaza in Bacolod City, recently.

The tourney is organized by the Association of Negros Darters and Darts Club.

Yielding to the tandem of Chad Dalpatan of Silay and Juberay Grijaldo of Baciwa in the initial draw, Bagotayao and Ganon climbed up from the losers group to the championship, by beating all opponents along the way.
