The government has launched an ambitious technology-backed modernization program to boost the Philippines ' bid to join the ranks of First World countries in 20 years, which includes Dumaguete and Bacolod , President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said yesterday.

In the new exciting world of ICT, we now have the Cyber Corridor which encompasses the business process outsourcing centers, the president said in her speech keynoting the 50th Anniversary of the Department of Science and Technology at the World Trade Center in Pasay City .

This corridor runs the whole length of the country from north to south, she said.

Coconut
production gets boost

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo directed the Department of Science and Technology yesterday to conduct further research to maximize the productivity of the oftentimes overlooked coconut as a means to improve the lives of millions of Filipinos.

In her speech keynoting the 50th Anniversary of the DOST at the World Trade Center in Pasay yesterday morning, the President said that “by improving productivity in coconut areas, more money can be put in poor people's pockets so they can afford the higher world price of food.”

Negros Oriental is among the coconut producing areas of the Philippines .

PRC exams set

The Professional Regulation Commission has scheduled eight licensure examinations this month in various testing centers in the country.

The examination for Foresters was held July 3 and 4 in Manila, Baguio, Davao, Legaspi, Tugeugarao and Zamboanga, while that for Agriculturists started yesterday, up to tomorrow in Manila and all regional offices nationwide.

Written examinations for Marine Deck Officers and Optometrists are set July 12 and 13 and July 15 to 18, and for Ocular Pharmacology on July 17, both in Manila .
