Negrenses shine in Taekwondo

The Negros Taekwondo Union-Main collected 10 gold and six silver medals to finish first runner-up in the Mayor Jerry Treñas Dinagyang Festival Taekwondo Championship held recently at the Ateneo de Iloilo.

The team fell short by one gold for the over-all champion honors won by the Antique Taekwondo Team that finished the tournament with 11 gold medals.

Falling behind the NTU-Main in the ranking was Iloilo Diasnes Gym that settled for third place with seven gold medals.

Reynel Jardeleza bagged the gold for the Negros team in men's 54 kgs, while Darlene Temporosa replicated the feat in women's 47 kgs.

Kathleen Dinsay took the gold in grade school girls' Group 0-Advance and teammate Stephanie Lamayo ruled the Group 1-Advance for an inspiring performance of the 15-player Negros squad.

In the grade school boys' category, golden markers were made by Francis De la Cruz in Group 0-Novice, Joshua Danielle Rosalia in Group 1A-Advance and Group 1B-Advance (special match), Jimbrey Chua in the Group 2A-Advance, Jb Locsin in Group 2B-Advance and Patrick Arceña in Group 6-Novice.

Silver medalists for the NTU-Main in the grade school boys' division were Danielle Iwarata in Group 1A-Novice, Benjamin Santibañez, Group 1B-Novice, Anthony Guinanao, Group 2A-Novice, Justin De la Cruz, Group 2B-Advance, David Tom, Group 3B-Advance, and Akizu Pama, Group 4A-Advance.

The tournament, organized by taekwondo coach Jojo Castro, drew participation from 200 taekwondo athletes all over Western Visayas. *NAB
