TFM farmers walk
for CARP extension

Farmers of Task Force Mapalad will continue what they call their four-day Walk for Land Reform and Justice throughout Negros Occidental today, reaching Bacolod City this evening for mass activities calling for the immediate passage of the land reform extension law.

TFM president Jose Rodito Angeles said in a press release that he attributes the enthusiastic reception to the march to the strong desire of the rural community for extension of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program with reforms.

He said many of the marchers are holders of certificate of land ownership award who remain uninstalled because of landowner resistance. That is one of the reasons why CARP must be extended, he said.

About 400 marchers from the north left Sagay City on Monday, and proceeded to Cadiz City where they were joined by a group of about 150 farmers and farm workers, the press release said.

They spent the night in Manapla and proceeded to Silay City yesterday.

In Kabankalan City Monday, about 100 farmers from Negros Oriental were joined by 30 farm workers from Negros Occidental in their “Walk” towards Bacolod , the press release said.

In Isabela, 100 farmers also joined them and 70 more in Hinigaran.

They were joined by 35 farmers and 10 CLOA holders yesterday.

TFM-Negros spokesperson Edna Sobrecaray said in a press statement that Negrense congressmen should see how the people in Negros desire to own land under CARP. She was referring to Monico Puentebella of Bacolod City , Jeffrey Ferrer of the 4th District, and Ignacio Arroyo of the 5th District whom the farmers have accused of campaigning against the extension of CARP, which expires on June 30 this year.*
