| The Andres Bonifacio Elementary School II in Bacolod City recently won first prize in the library contest sponsored by the Department of Education, a press release from the Rotary Club of Bacolod-Central said.
The school was adjudged to have the “Most Functional Library” in District I, for its services, reference materials, facilities, librarian, and information technology,
School principal Grace Abao said the library is frequented by students for its wide selection of reading and reference materials, and well-ventilated and adequate space which makes it conducive for learning.The approachability and competence of the librarian was also a big factor, the press release said.
ABES II, the adopted school of the Rotary Club of Bacolod-Central, has a student population of 2,000.
District I is composed of six schools, namely: ABKASA Elementary School , Mandalagan Elementary School , ABES I, ABES II, Banago Elementary Schools I and II.
Mandalagan Elementary School was adjudged 2nd and the third, ABKASA Elementary School, the press release added.*

activity set at Cebu mall
The SWEEP Innovation and Excellence Awards program will hold its closing activity on Feb. 1- 2, at SM Cebu, with more than 100 engineering students and faculty members from top colleges and universities in the country to showcase their work and participate in an ECE quiz bee showdown, a press release from organizers said.
Participants and guests will view the working models of wireless applications this year, on the theme “Going Wireless for Disaster Preparedness.”
Out of 59 mobile solutions submitted as entries, 10 were chosen to advance to the finals. Student-faculty teams from SWEEP partner schools designed applications to help improve the country's ability to respond to the threat of disasters and to minimize the resulting damages, the press release said.
Among the entries that made it to the finals is a frequency scanner for detecting victims trapped during earthquakes or landslides; an application that allows interaction between mobile phone users and health officials and workers; and using the information to alert subscribers about possible viral and epidemic outbreaks.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners and equivalent grants will be given to their schools. First prize is P500,000; second prize, P300,000; and third prize, P150,000, the press release said.
Meanwhile, the PalaECEpan quiz bee challenge will test students, including those from three schools in Cebu -- the University of San Carlos , University of Cebu – Banilad campus and the Don Bosco Technological College .
Seven schools in Metro Manila, 10 in North Luzon, four in South Luzon, six in the Visayas and eight schools in Mindanao will compete in the quiz, the press release added.*
