marine scientists urge

Philippine marine scientists have called on the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to reconsider the extension of the oil exploration permit for the Tañon Strait issued to the Japan Exploration Company, and are also calling for a transparent review of the whole Environmental Impact Assessment process for this activity.

In a statement, marine scientists belonging to the Philippine Association of Marine Scientists lamented the claim of the Department of Energy and the DENR that there were no negative impacts on the marine ecosystem of Tañon Strait as reported in the newspapers a week ago.

USAID lauds Bayawan FLUP

High-ranking officials of the United States Agency for International Development in the Philippines have assured continuous help to Bayawan City in southern Negros Oriental, for its successful implementation of its forest land use plan and other development projects.

Mission Director Jon Lindborg of USAID-Philippines, Daniel Moore, chief of its Office of Energy and Environment, and party were in Bayawan City Friday for a briefing and on site visits to the FLUP and other projects funded by their agency.

Mayor Gerry Sarana, in welcoming the USAID officials, expressed gratitude for the assistance to Bayawan City that has boosted its development and progress.

I-tax collection yields
positive result

The implementation of the Integrated Taxation to the pilot local government units in Negros Oriental yielded positive results, provincial treasurer Danilo Mendez said Friday.

He said the I-tax has helped in getting better tax goals in the pilot areas or Bayawan City , Dumaguete City , Zamboanguita , Valencia , Sibulan, San Jose , Amlan, Pamplona , Mabinay, Manjuyod and Bindoy.

Mendez said, however, that he  cannot  fully assure  the  success  of  the system since  it is  still  on  the  pilot  stage, although it is presently improving.
