Loose firearms campaign up
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Philippine National Police in Negros Oriental is waging an all-out campaign against loose firearms in compliance with the Executive Order 585-A of President Gloria Arroyo.

PNP provincial director, S/Supt. Melvin Ramon Buenafe, appealed to holders of unlicensed guns to avail of the government's amnesty program that ends on November 14 this year.

The Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office has yet to account for unlicensed guns even as it received surrender fillers from holders of more homemade firearms.

Buenafe said homemade firearms will not be registered but NORPPO will accept them as surrendered guns.

Owners of expired licensed firearms should also renew the documents for their guns, Operations Officer Insp. Ronie Macasilhig said.

Under EO 585-A, Arroyo ordered that the payment for the registration of low-powered firearms is P3,000 and P5,000 for high-powered firearms.

Meanwhile, the provincial police has acquired additional 100 radio transceivers, Buenafe said.

He also stressed the need for a repeater that can trigger signals from Dauin in the south up to Tanjay in the north.

Buenafe said they are eyeing the former repeater site of NORAD-7 somewhere in the north of Dumaguete, even as other radio clubs have signified their intention in helping the police in this matter.

The REACT Sidlakan group, through Fernando Martinez, said the city PNP should also acquire a repeater to augment the communication facility of the Metro Dumaguete area.*JG
