NORSU offering crime lab
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

President Dr. Henry Sojor of the Negros Oriental State University offered its crime laboratory facilities for use by Philippine National Police investigators at a recent meeting of the Metro Dumaguete Peace Advocates.

Police provincial director, S/Supt. Melvin Ramon Buenafe, said the NORSU crime lab is better equipped than their own facility, which is capable only of determining the presence of illegal drugs.

The crime lab of the school has a polygraph lie detection machine, bullet comparison microscope that can view two objects at the same time, photo macrograph, weighing scales, bullet recovery tube, and police line tapes, among others.

It can also be used for document analysis, Dumaguete City PNP chief Supt. Dionardo Carlos said.

This means, examination of physical evidence collected and submitted by different units of the PNP and other government investigative agencies will now be conducted at the NORSU crime lab.

This is aimed at immediate solution to crimes such as illegal possession of firearms and illegal drugs, and for administration of justice, Carlosa said.

Judge Rosendo Bandal Jr of the Regional Trial Court Branch 34, or the special drugs court, had said there is no legal obstacles in presenting evidences that may be secured from the NORSU crime lab, provided it is conducted by a police or an expert from the National Bureau of Investigation.

A draft memorandum of agreement between NORSU and the PNP crime lab was presented to the peace advocates during its meeting Tuesday hosted by the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas chaired by Roy Bustillo.*JG
