Firm mulls dairy farm
BY MARICAR ARANAS

Representatives from an international foundation catering to dairy production called on Vice Gov. Jose Baldado Friday, and relayed their interest in putting up dairy farm production in Negros Oriental.

Marilyn Mabale of the O' Lakes Foundation Philippines Inc. said they chose the province from among other places in the Visayas and Mindanao .

She said they were impressed by the existing initiative of the province to dairy such as the Gatasang Barangay and the Supplemental Fresh Milk Feeding program.

Dhimant De Sai, a supplier of the Indian Milk Processing Equipment, said the province has huge dairy potentials because of its wide vegetation areas.

She said that, based on their standard requirement, the best area for dairy farm production for cattle should have enough foliage, moderate temperature and clean water supply.

Mabale said their target areas now are Dumaguete , Valencia and Sibulan. She, however, said interested local government units, organizations and cooperatives can also avail of the program.

De Sai added they also consider the excellent peace and order situation in Negros Oriental and the support of the province.

Mabale said the National Dairy Authority is willing to give funds to improve the dairy supply since the country is now 90 percent dependent on imported dairy supply.

Meanwhile, Baldado said the program will not only complement the dairy production in the province, but will also help local farmers earn from an alternative livelihood.*MA
