| Dropouts and out-of-school youths in Siquijor province are now studying under the Alternative Learning System, formerly the Non-formal Education, of the Department of Education.
Albert Angolo, coordinator of the Napo Elementary School in San Juan , Siquijor, said he is teaching automotive skills to at least 30 enrollees from Catulayan, and Tag-ibo, San Juan at the Quezon Memorial Institute of Siquijor.
ALS provides vocational and technological skills for practical learning to the students, teaches theory and literacy to the youth, among them, high school and college dropouts.
The system also emphasizes dual technical training, one that integrates company-based training and school-based education, Angolo added.
Meanwhile, farm production in Siquijor increased due to the implementation of the Ginintuang Masaganang Ani program by Department of Agriculture, Edgar Anhao, supervising agriculturist and division chief for research division, said.
He said recipient sectors are rice, corn and the high value commercial crops producers.
The increase in production was also attributed to the financial and technical support shared by the local and national government to the farmers.
The Farmers Scientist Training Program is also a big factor for the increase, Anhao said, citing the promotion and adoption of new technology and other inputs introduced.*RG
