The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod yesterday approved on first reading an ordinance institutionalizing policies for the prevention of Sexually Transmitted Disease/Human Immuno-deficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome in Bacolod City and creating the Bacolod Local STD/HIV/AIDS Council.

The ordinance, proposed by Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, provides that the City of Bacolod adheres to the policy of the State to promote public awareness about the cause, modes of transmission, consequence, and means of prevention and control of HIV/AIDS through a comprehensive education and information campaign.

The campaigns will promote information and employ scientific approaches, focus on the family, be carried out in all schools and training centers, workplaces and communities and involve affected individuals and groups, including people with HIV/AIDS, it said.

The ordinance provides that reproductive health centers in Bacolod shall have additional services and qualified personnel for high risk groups and other clients.

It also provides that entertainment establishments shall make condoms available, and encourage their employees to avail of regular STD screening and medical examination.

The Local STD/HIV/AIDS Council shall strongly implement and monitor activities for STD/HIV/AIDS prevention in Bacolod City.*CGS
