La Salle to decide
on U-19 stint today
BY CEDELF TUPAS

The varsity sports director of the University of St. La Salle yesterday threw the NOFA Provincial Men's Football Under-19 finals in doubt, saying that the school has yet to decide whether it will field its team for the championship on Sunday in Bago City .

USLS varsity head Roger Banzuela yesterday reiterated that they want to be assured that proper security measures are put in place for Sunday's title showdown against West Negros College at the Manuel Torres Sports Center pitch.

But NOFA coordinator Pauline Javelona last night said that the police in Bago City will secure the game on Sunday.

Chaos marred La Salle's previous game in Bago City in Dec. 2 when angry spectators charged at the USLS players and coaching staff, following the melee between Bago standout Rey Boy Sacapaño and Jae Von Lobation of La Salle .

The free-for-all happened with five minutes left and La Salle ahead, 2-0. Referee Catalino Valderrama Jr. awarded victory to La Salle .

La Salle coach Freddie Lazarito, who was not at the Dec. 2 game, had earlier said the match was a traumatic experience for his players.

“They basically ran for their lives,” he added.

“We don't know but maybe some of those who attacked our players in Bago might come back to harm our players again,” Banzuela said.

But Javelona said she will meet USLS president Bro. Rey Suplido today to assure him of the players' safety.

Banzuela said he will meet with the team today, before making a decision whether they will play or not. “The players also need to get the permission of their parents,” he added.

Defending champion West Negros moved into the finals after posting a 5-0 drubbing of San Carlos City last Sunday also in Bago City .*CPT
