Negros island braces
for power shutdowns

The National Transmission Corporation yesterday said 10-hour brownouts will occur in February and continuous power outage two to four days in March, will affect its consumers all over Negros island.

The interruption of transmission facilities in Negros island was discussed at the first quarter coordination meeting by Transco held Thursday in Dumaguete City .

Present were managers and representatives from Orica, Ducomi, Noreco 1 and 2 and the Philippine National Oil Corporation from Negros Oriental; Noceco in Kabankalan; Ceneco in Bacolod; Vresco in San Carlos, San Miguel Brewery Distileria in Bago City; and Dynasty Management Inc, all from Negros Occidental.

Also invited were representatives from the North Negros Geothermal Power Plant in Bago.

Transco said the power shutdown is scheduled in line with the energization of the multi-million peso Cebu-Negros and Cebu-Panay interconnection uprating project, to address power deficiencies in the region.

A brownout yesterday was cancelled because the contractors of Cebu-Negros Uprating project have decided they can work without power interruption of lines and feeders.

Activities during the first two quarters include energization of the additional 50MVA transformer at Bay 72 in Amlan; shutdown of the old 30 MVA ; transfer of the 50MVA to the location of old 30 MVA; installation of gantry at Bus I and II of the 138-kv; and installation of new beams of Bay 74, Transco said.

Each activity requires at least one day of power shutdown.

Transco also scheduled another power shutdown of the 138kv in Palinpinon 1 Line 2, and Palinpinon 2 Line 1, for erection and stringing works as well as dismantling of an existing tower.

One of the most important topics discussed at the meeting was the effort to minimize power service interruption during the scheduled revamp.

The Transco has constructed a new power site in Amlan connecting to Naga in Cebu island. Duirng outages.

The longest and continuous power shutdown will be on March 20, 23, 29 and 30, April 5, 26, in the existing Amlan-Pondol Line 1 Cebu-Negros submarine cable.*JG/MA
