to avenge defeat

More than the title, revenge will be another subplot when WBO bantamweight titlist Gerry Peñalosa of San Carlos City battles former world champion Ratanachai Sor Vorapin of Thailand on March 2 at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City .

Peñalosa (56-6-2) has defeated Vorapin, the No. 1 contender for his title, by sixth round TKO back in November 2000 in Parañaque for the WBC super flyweight title.

The 31-year-old Vorapin is unbeaten in his last seven fights, after getting knocked out by Mexican Jhonny Gonzalez in Arizona in their WBO bantamweight title fight in October 2005.

PSC wants more
active role in Palaro

The Philippine Sports Commission wants to take a more active role in the conduct of the Palarong Pambansa, commissioner Eric Loretizo, who has been tasked by PSC chairman William Ramirez to sit as a member in the Palaro management committee so the sports agency can assert its oversight functions, said last night.

The Department of Education runs the Palarong Pambansa with the PSC providing technical support, Loretizo said.

Part of the technical support will be to conduct coaches' seminars and the monitoring of athletes who have potential to make the national pool.
