| The Philippine Sports Commission wants to take a more active role in the conduct of the Palarong Pambansa, commissioner Eric Loretizo, who has been tasked by PSC chairman William Ramirez to sit as a member in the Palaro management committee so the sports agency can assert its oversight functions, said last night.
The Department of Education runs the Palarong Pambansa with the PSC providing technical support, Loretizo said.
Part of the technical support will be to conduct coaches' seminars and the monitoring of athletes who have potential to make the national pool.
He said the PSC is also planning to draft clear-cut policies to prevent the incidence of age-cheating in the Palaro.
The Palarong Pambansa is tentatively set in April in Puerta Princesa City in Palawan .
Another Negrense commissioner, Richie Garcia, has been assigned to monitor elite sports leagues like the UAAP, University Games and the UAAP.
The PSC will also monitor the progress of the athletes bound for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing with Garcia leaving for the United States on Jan. 14 to check on the progress of swimmers Miguel Molina, Ryan Arabejo, Daniel Coakley and J.B. Walsh.*CPT
