PAO harvests organic veggies
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

About 20 kilos of sweet bell pepper were harvested and sold Wednesday at the greenhouse demonstration at the Provincial Agriculture Office, in Dumaguete City .

The sweet bell pepper was sold at P200/kilo because it is organically grown.

Randy de Padua of the Research Department of PAO said this is their first time the province produced it. Normally this variety is not produced on rainy season, he said.

After the demonstration the variety will be distributed to the different Barangay Agriculture Development Center sites in the province.

Padua added they normally experiment on different types of fruits, vegetables and spices in the greenhouse demo farm before they will propagate the variety to the farmers.

He said majority of the farmers in the BADC sites are now practicing organic farming because they can sell their produced in a higher price.

Provincial Agri-business chief Grace Dizon said the marketing for organic products is not difficult, especially with the supermarkets.

They are now studying how to sustain the farm produce, especially those that command higher price like sweet bell pepper and lettuce.

The green house demo farm has also tried planting lettuce, eggplant, pechay, melon and honeydew.*JG
