Local boxers headline pro card

Mark Gil Melligen and Nelson Arellano are among the boxers in action when the Bugal sang Bacolodnon Boxing Promotions, a newly formed pro boxing promotions outfit based in Bacolod City , holds its first promotion at 6 p.m. on Jan. 26 at the Casino Filipino Hotel in Bacolod .

The promotion features three other homegrown boxers who will go up against opponents coming from other parts of the country.

The promotion is sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board, GAB commissioner Juan Ramon ‘Monju' Guanzon, who is also the president of the Negros Amateur Boxing Association, said.

Melligen of Barangay Pahanocoy who will clash in eight rounds against Carlo Magale of Tagbilaran City in the 119 lbs. category; while Arellano, a many-time regional Palaro medalist for Negros Occidental High School, who hails from Barangay 35, battles takes on Alberto Simbajon of Tagbilaran City in the 112 category.

Other bouts include Leonardo Guardiano (116 lbs.) against Rey Las Pinas of Cagayan de Oro City; Roy Sumugat (115 lbs.) versus Wilfred Escobar of Candijay, Bohol; and Merlito Sabillo (106 lbs.) versus Powell Balaba also of Tagbilaran City .

Except for the Melligen-Magale bout, the four other bouts will be fought in four rounds, organizers said.

“I hope our Bacolod boxing fans will come out and support this promotion as this might jump-start the professional careers of these five boxers from Bacolod City,” Guanzon said.*CPT
