Guba departs for Melbourne
BY CEDELF TUPAS

Martina Guba leaves for Melbourne , Australia tonight to see action in the Asian 14-Under Tennis Series sponsored by the Australian Open.

The La Carlota-born netter, who will see action from Jan. 10-16, earned the right to play in the international tournament because she is ranked No. 6 in the ATF 14-Under Series. Only the top 8 have slots in the tournament.

Guba, champion of the ATF 14-Under Agra Cup in Manila in last October and finalist in the Bahrain leg, was invited to play by Tennis Australia , which is paying for her airfare and accommodations, along with the ATF.

Yap , Williams share honor

James Yap continues to stand tallest among the Purefoods Giants while Kelly Williams remains rock solid for the Sta. Lucia Realtors, the main reason why they were adjudged the PBA Press Corps Player of the Week for the period Dec. 31-Jan. 6.

“Big Game James” scored a conference high-tying 29 points last Sunday, boosting Purefoods to a cruising 101-87 win over Coca-Cola and into the first automatic semifinals berths by virtue of a 12-4 win-loss record.

“James hit a lot of big-time shots in the second half (20 of his 25 points). And then his timely treys (5-of-11) doused cold water on the rally aspirations of Coca-Cola,” noted Giants coach Ryan Gregorio.
