| The 5th National Corn Congress will open tomorrow and run until Jan. 11 at the Punta Villa Resort and Convention Center in Iloilo City .
About 1,500 participants, including farmer producers, livestock and poultry raisers, feed millers, grain traders, traders and marketers, financiers, government institutions and private investors, are expected to attend the three-day gathering.
Themed “Magkakaisang Pagpapalaganap ng Akmang Teknolohiya tungo sa Maunlad na Maisan,” the event will showcase best farm practices and updates in corn production, post harvest activities, marketing trends and research and development.
Experts will discuss issues concerning the corn industry and a field tour will to a local corn farm will be held on the third day.
The 5th National Corn Congress, organized by the Department of Agriculture Ginintuang Masaganang Ani Corn Program with the PhilMaize and the Northern Iloilo Corn Producers Association Inc., seeks to help farmers improve their socio-economic situation through the use of modern mechanized equipment, efficient marketing system and maximize the use of appropriate state-of-the art technologies to lure and encourage new investor and producers.
DA 6 Regional Executive Director Larry Nacionales said the event will be an effective venue for key players and stakeholders in the corn industry to ideas and experiences for the development of the country's corn sector.
Nacionales said the increasing pressure for the corn industry due to the expanding poultry and livestock sector ushers in government intervention that will focus mainly on the marketing and post-harvest improvement of the industry.*NLG
